How to Choose the Brightness of LED Car Headlights?

2025-05-28

When choosing LED car headlights, two key indicators should be taken into your consideration, namely wattage and lumen. It is necessary to consider a number of factors and choose the right headlights for use.

Generally speaking, the power of LED car headlights is between 30 and 40 watts, and if it is a daytime running light, the power is less than 10 watts. But this is not a fixed standard. In actual situations, it needs to be determined based on the original car light power and the owner's demand for brightness. The luminous efficiency of LED car headlights is usually 91 lumens per watt, and 80 to 100 lumens/watt is a more appropriate range.

Compared with traditional halogen lamps, LED car headlights have obvious advantages in luminous efficiency. When these two types of the lights are of the same wattage, LED light will be brighter than halogen lamps. As a result of that, when replacing your car lights, no need to choose a higher-power LED bulb. The original car's LED lamps with the same power or slightly lower power can meet the needs.

So, here's a new question: Is the higher the wattage, the better for you to choose? The answer is obviously no. The higher the wattage, the greater the power, and the corresponding increase in operating temperature. Without good heat dissipation measures, the life of the LED lamp will be affected. The operating temperature of the LED chip should be controlled below 85°C, and its service life should be guaranteed to exceed 30,000 hours as much as possible. Another point is that the car circuit has a rated power limit. If the wattage of the LED car headlight is too high, it is easy to cause the wire to be overloaded, the circuit to heat up, or even burn out.

Here we use the car headlight as an example, it is divided into two-lamp system and four-lamp system. In the four-lamp system, the outer lights are usually low and high beams, and the inner lights are high beam single beams. The power of the high beam is usually between 35 and 60 watts, and the lumens are between 3400 and 5900. The power of the low beam is between 35 and 55 watts, and the lumens are between 3400 and 5400. At present, the more common choice is to use 35 watts as the standard configuration of the headlight, and some models use 55 watt high beams.
